Home decor and gift idea --- Article
Time for Clocks… so many choices, so little time…
By Elizabeth Hekimian-Williams
Clocks and watches make great gifts and they are also
fine decorative accents for your home and office, but I think they're
even more remarkable when you consider their history and
their meaning to us through the ages and personally.
When thinking about the type of time pieces and clocks you'd like to
use in your home or office, it can be useful to think about the following
factors. Some of you might find it interesting to learn more about the history
and evolution of time keeping and clocks through the centuries. Also, you may
wish to think about the decorative appeal to you of a particular clock, what
uses you intend for the clock for the particular environment or room you wish to
display it within, and also what meaning time and clocks have for you in
general.
Remember when you went out on your own and got your first home? You
probably wanted and felt you needed a clock. Maybe you wanted it to help wake
you up for school or work or else simply to KNOW what time it is when you're
sitting in the living room or in the kitchen! Well there have been many others
before you that have also been interested in time keeping.
Telling time has arisen out of curiosity, need, and just pure fascination!
People have used so many different ways of keeping track of the passage of time,
including calendars and clocks. Here are some types of timekeepers through
history and where you can read more about them. It started around the
16 th century BC with sundials where people used shadow casting sticks
and other instruments to measure the length or direction of the shadow cast by
the sun . If you go to this URL http://www.britannica.com/clockworks/t_main.html you can learn more about the Sundial, and all of these other
types of time keeping instruments too- the Clepsydra, Astrolabe, Candle clock,
Sandglass, Weight-driven clock, Spring-driven clock, Pendulum clock, Quartz
watch, and Cesium atomic clock. I know, wow! I haven't finished going through
all that information yet, but I sure know where to go when my kids have more
questions about clocks now! Another interesting website that REALLY helps out
with understanding and learning how to make sundials can be found at this URL
http://www.sundials.co.uk/home3.htm Go
there to learn and be amazed. Finally, another resource you can consult is
http://nist.time.gov/ - that's the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) - and this is where you'd
go nowadays to get the United State's official clock. There are now some clocks
and watches that even synchronize automatically with the nation's official
clock.
But do we really need watches and clocks? Most would say "yes" though
some would differ in their opinions. Sometimes I think we're becoming a society
that is too time sensitive. Remember the little children, timeless, carefree, no
or few timed commitments or responsibilities. When do we have the best times? On
vacation usually, when we're not "tied down" to the time. So, yes, I think some
of us, sometimes, have flipped over to "the other side". You know what I mean.
One day you're just using a watch or clock to help guide you and pace your day,
perhaps once in a while so as not to miss an important event. But another day
down the road, you suddenly discover and feel as if you're being led by the
watch or clock, that you're dependent on knowing the time, and you check it all
too frequently. You might feel there's something missing or wrong if you're not
wearing your watch or if your clock on the microwave is wrong since the power
blinked off.
I think there's entirely too many people out there that are feeling
overly stressed out because they're running out of time, because they're running
late, because they don't have enough time, or because they think they're not
very good at time management. Ease up guys and gals, please!
There's a place for knowing the time and for keeping responsibilities
and appointments, and there's a time to… well… forget about time --- at least
for a short while. Remember to use clocks to beautify your home and
office, and as a practical aide and guide to help pace your day
when needed. The right clock can strike you as something you enjoy and admire,
in how they work, in what they do, in the feelings they stir in you. Truly,
they are as remarkable as their history. Choose them, use them, and
enjoy them in that spirit. Then forget about them for a while and go
enjoy un-timed time with someone you care about!

Riddle for the day from the Riddlenut
A horse is tied to a five meter
rope in front of an old saloon. Six meters behind the horse is a bale of hay.
Without breaking his rope, the horse is able to eat the hay whenever he chooses.
How is this possible?

Marriage Thought of the Day:
Remember to surprise your honey at least once a month! Don't get into
old routines and stay stuck in a rut. Here's a simple but effective idea, if
you haven't done it in a long while (or ever) … Surprise your honey this week-
secretly pack up in your vehicle… a blanket or covering for the ground, some
simple favorite foods and drink for a picnic lunch or dinner, a boom box or
music playing system if you have it, and wisk your honey away to a local scenic
park for a romantic leisurely picnic together. Hugs and kisses allowed, but keep
it family friendly, remember you're at a public park! If you brought some music,
maybe a dance or a serenade… or, maybe not… guess it depends on your abilities
and if that would please your mate! Remember that WAS the goal. J

PPS- here's a further update on the discount
printer cartridges we received- the remanufactured ones we received did not work
properly on our printer, so we're not entirely sure about endorsing this company
and their products. Then again, it may just be difficult for our specific
printer and others may have better luck. If anyone else tries this company and
has a fine experience with the cartridges please let us know and we'll pass
along the information to everyone else in this newsletter. Thanks guys! We are
still listing the discount printer cartridge company in the Freebies and
Cheapies section of our website, but each consumer must carefully consider
whether that company's products will work for their printers. If any or several
of you try this company with different printers and have the same problem then
we will remove them from the cheapies section. So please send us your feedback
so we know of other people's experiences should you decide to try them.
