On a personal note- well, guess what happened at that soccer
tournament we were off to when last we "spoke"...
My son got injured!
To think that earlier in the day we rushed to the doctor to get him
"cleared" for his high school soccer tryouts, which he passed
with flying colors by the way!
Well, late that evening, during a tournament soccer game, he
went down and got injured. We rushed him to an after hours
clinic and he gets the news "no soccer until you heal, probably
for at least 3 or 4 weeks!
He was limping for a few days but now he's doing pretty well.
At least it wasn't more serious. Actually, as the kids get older
and play more aggressively, I seem to be worrying more about
their safety.
Really it doesn't matter to me if he plays or not anymore, I just want
him to be happy, stay healthy, and it's a good wholesome
activity for a teenager, but I have to tell you that it hurt me to the
core when he said he wouldn't be able to play and he would
not be able to participate in the high school tryouts.
I suddenly had this deep feeling of sadness for him. I knew he had
been voluntarily putting in practice time with teammates from last year,
I thought about all his efforts and preparations, his desires, to go to
tryouts the following week and to play for the high school team again
this year. Now what would happen?
You know, I'm finding that my children's sadness touches me even
more deeply than any other personal experience sadness that I might
feel. Do you find that too?
Well, to finish the story, sort of... he's been asked to hang out with
the team during tryouts and practices. It looks like he'll have a chance
to be on the team still, and they're waiting for him to recover and get
a doctor's A-OK before they let him get out there with that soccer
ball.
So guys and gals, don't despair at first glance, have patience, talk it
out, maybe there's a solution. That's what we told our son,
that's what
I tell you. Draw on your faith, activate your persistence, and go
for it!

Tips for Home: Candles and Lights for
Everyday and the Holidays

Do you know much about candles? Do you even use them?
What about novelty lamps and lighting? Some folks don't have
much experience with candles except to pull one out in
an emergency when the electricity goes out so they can
see.
Many, though, are now discovering and enjoying the mood
setting effects and sometimes the aromatherapy benefits of
candles and novelty lighting. And the holiday time seems to
bring out even more interest and curiosity, as well as creative
uses of these lighting sources.
Candles for the home can easily range from tiny tea candle sizes
to thin tall tapers, to nearly foot wide ones with multiple wicks.
There are solid colored candles, vividly colored ones, hand
carved
and designed ones, thematic things melted within ones, inspirational
writing on them ones, scented in all sorts of different scents
ones-
well, you get the idea. Definitely a lot of variability so you can
select what mood you want to create, what scents you want to
subtly or more provocatively infuse into your surroundings, and so
on.
Then there are other lighting sources you can experiment with
in creating the everyday or holiday atmosphere and mood you're
after too. Some lamps have candle holders, more are electric and
the plug-in type. Again, there is variability in size, sculpture,
lamp
shades that are plain, others that have interesting patterns or
bright
colors. Some novelty lamps are meant to be used as a dim accent
only, similar in strength of wattage to a night light. Others are
for bright lighting.
It's important to read carefully the type of bulbs acceptable for
use with any particular lamp. If you use too high a wattage for
what's allowed in that lamp, you could risk having a fire. Likewise,
it's vital that you use candles under controlled situations. Place
them
in containers suitable to catch drippings and away from anything that
could easily catch fire. Very young children should be kept away from
a lit candle. Other children and even adults should be alerted to the
existence of a lit candle and it should be explained to them to keep
everything away from the flame and take care not to knock
it over.
Try it, you'll like it! The easiest way to break into using candles,
if you're not much of a candle person until now, is to load up on
a few of your favorite characteristics all in one candle that you buy
and try out. Think of your favorite scent combined with a favorite
color or interest theme, and try lighting that special candle you buy
while you also listen to a favorite musical selection. If you also have
done this while you're alone and semi-relaxed, this is going to be a
fabulous experience for you as you'll relax and enjoy this time
even more.
For the holidays, some folks enjoy using reds and greens to
compliment their home decor even if they don't light the candles.
More folks enjoy lighting them for their special glow
and highlights
to the room though. Others keep their usual candles and lamps
around but just dress them up on the outside with wreaths,
or red bead strings. You can also consider changing the effect
and appearance of the candles and the decor by changing
your candle holders. There is a lot of selection when it
comes
to purchasing candle holders as well.
Here are a few fun ideas for enjoying some candles in your
lifestyle.
1. Take out some favorite candles and light them up for a
candlelit dinner with the kids even though it's no special occasion.
The kids really love this.
2. Instead of using carpet deodorizer (or in addition to), get
a pleasantly scented candle lit and let it infuse your home with
the light and enjoyable perfume.
3. Take a deluxe relaxation bath by placing several lit candles
around the room and dimming or turning off the other bathroom
lights. If you also have a tabletop waterfall or a relaxing music
cd to listen to as well, you'll feel like you've been transported
to another world.
4. Get romantic mooding in your bedroom when you want
to cuddle with your honey? Forget about lights on or lights off.
How about some mood lighting instead with low light novelty
lamps or some favorite candles?
5. Set out candles for special occasion evenings or holidays
lining your driveway or sidewalk as luminaries (often placed
in bag-like recepticles with sand under and surrounding candle).
6. Use special floating candles in a swimming pool, in a wide
mouth glass vase half filled with water, or in a bathtub for
a mesmerizing effect.
Candles aren't just for special occasions, although they're
definitely
fun for those as well. Enjoy the variety, experiment with the
colors, scents, and sizes. Think creatively when incorporating
them into your lifestyle more.
These are little accent gems that can create satisfying mood
changes in your ambiance, for your visitors and within
yourself.
